Goethedenkmal

Goethedenkmal stands on Leipzig’s Naschmarkt, in front of the Alte Handelsbörse. Carl Seffner shows Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as a young man in a Rococo costume, holding a book in his right hand.

The bronze figure was cast in 1902 and inaugurated in 1903, after Leipzig chose this site and a monument committee gathered donations. A 2.65-metre statue rises from Max Bischoff’s 2.5-metre red-granite pedestal, recalling Goethe’s almost three years studying law in Leipzig. The reliefs show Friederike Oeser and Anna Katharina Schönkopf, linking the monument to two women from his Leipzig years.

A gold laurel-framed medallion marks the front, while the back recalls Goethe as a student from 1765 to 1768. The relaxed walking pose suggests a route from the Rosental towards Auerbach’s Hof, a setting connected with Faust I.
