Felsenkeller
Felsenkeller stands in Leipzig’s Plagwitz district, in the Lindenau area, as a neobaroque hall for culture and social life. August Hermann Schmidt and Arthur Johlige designed the 1890 building for the Carl Wilhelm Naumann brewery. A two-storey corner tower with a neobaroque dome gives the façade its most distinctive feature.
The hall began as a concert and ballroom venue, then also housed the Felsenkellerlichtkino cinema. Its large rooms became meeting places for Leipzig’s workers’ movement and political speakers. After restoration began in 2005, concerts, readings, parties, theatre, markets, balls and dance events returned. Naumanns Tanzlokal provides live music and club nights, while Naumanns Gaststube serves traditional and modern dishes.
Rosas Salon keeps Rosa Luxemburg’s connection visible, recalling her speech here in 1913. Outside, an old-chestnut beer garden hosts open-air concerts, comedy, quizzes, bingo, burlesque and flea markets. The building also welcomes events connected with the annual Wave-Gotik-Treffen and remains a listed cultural site in Leipzig.
