Wasserturm Ravensberg
Wasserturm Ravensberg rises from an artificial hill in Kiel’s Ravensberg district, built from brick in 1896. Its medieval fortification appearance recalls city walls, castle towers and defensive architecture. Rudolph Schmidt, Kiel’s city architect, designed the structure, which reaches roughly 30 metres high. A 23.7-metre diameter gives the tower a broad, powerful silhouette.
The building formed part of Kiel’s expanding water supply as taller buildings appeared around Holtenauer Straße. An Intze ring tank stood 15 metres above ground and held 1,500 cubic metres of water. The tank was decommissioned by 1990, after which the former utility building took on a new role. A 2013 renovation created 34 residential apartments while preserving the external brick architecture.
Schleswig-Holstein recognised the tower as a cultural monument of special significance in 1976. Between 2000 and 2012, theatre performances and concerts filled its interior. Around the base, the green space called the “green eye” offers play and relaxation beside the densely built neighbourhood.
