Wasserturm Kiel-Wik
Wasserturm Kiel-Wik rises in Kiel as a former water tower with a cylindrical shaft and an octagonal tank section. Its ground floor shows exposed red brick, while lighter plaster covers the upper sections. Alternating brick and plaster frame the tank area beneath an octagonal roof of red tiles.
Marine-Baurat Adalbert Kelm designed the reinforced-concrete structure, built between April and September 1904 for Kiel Naval School, nearby barracks and naval housing. Concrete pillars with round arches support a riveted Barkhausen steel tank that once held 300 cubic metres. After the waterworks closed in 1966, the tower buffered district heating until 1981, then became residential apartments after its 1992 heritage protection.
The most striking detail remains the contrast between red brick and pale plaster around the octagonal upper storey.
