Rantzau-Bau
Rantzau-Bau stands on the west side of Kiel Castle, where centuries of rebuilding meet the city’s present cultural quarter. You see the only surviving historical part of a castle once used as a residence by the Gottorf dukes.
Kiel Castle began around 1235 as a fortified residence and gained a moat during fourteenth-century expansion. A Renaissance building replaced the medieval structure by 1512, while further changes followed in 1568 and after the south wing collapsed in 1685. Added during the late seventeenth-century reconstruction, Rantzau-Bau survived the Second World War when the rest of the castle fell. The replacement building now contains the state library, a concert hall and a restaurant overlooking the fjord.
The rooms once held the Pomeranian art and cultural history collection, which moved to Greifswald in 2000. Events and exhibitions continue to connect this surviving fragment with Kiel’s cultural life.
