Lauschende

Lauschende stands in front of the concert hall in Kiel, where maritime city life meets a prominent setting for culture. Gustav Seitz cast the bronze statue in 1967. A seated woman wears a long evening gown, folds her hands in her lap, and closes her eyes.

Her slightly tilted head and relaxed posture suggest someone listening to a concert inside the building. The calm figure connects the busy city centre with the concentrated experience of music. Behind her, the modern concert hall rises from the remains of Kiel Castle, largely destroyed during the Second World War.

The cultural centre combines historical details with a five-storey building, flat roof, and octagonal tower. A low wing on stilts extends west, while the intact Rantzau building retains its grand staircase to the courtyard. Seitz taught sculpture in Hamburg until 1969, and this bronze preserves his focus on human form and quiet emotion.
