Festung Friedrichsort
Festung Friedrichsort stands near Kiel, Germany, at the narrowest point of the Kieler Außenförde. It occupies a narrow coastal passage between water and land. Built between 1632 and 1637 under Danish King Christian IV, the fortress guarded this route against Swedish attacks. An irregular pentagon shaped the original defensive plan. Grass-covered walls and moats enclosed bastions facing both the water and the land.
Over the centuries, Denmark, Sweden, Schleswig-Holstein and Prussia successively shaped the fortress’s ownership and form. Its structure changed repeatedly through expansion, dismantling and rebuilding. It later served as a refugee camp, a Bundeswehr military base and an industrial site. The remaining monument connects Kiel and Schleswig-Holstein with military, political and industrial history. A local association preserves the place through events, guided tours and exhibitions for the public. Grass-covered ramparts retain the clearest image of its original defensive setting.
