St. Nicolai Kirche
St. Nicolai Kirche stands at the highest point of historic Bothfeld in Hanover, a neo-Romanesque church with wheelchair access. Its 35-metre bell tower dates from the 14th century. Built in 1910 by Eduard Wendebourg, the present church replaced a Baroque hall church from 1776. The building was consecrated in October 1911.
Jugendstil-inspired decoration fills the interior, alongside stained glass showing Christ the Risen, four Evangelists, and four Old Testament prophets. The surviving baptismal font comes from the earlier church. A 1977 Rensch organ adds 27 registers and 1,344 pipes to the space, while restoration in 1988 returned the interior to its original state.
Three bells named Justice, Peace, and Joy hang in the tower, including one cast in 1639. Gravestones from the 17th to 19th centuries still surround the church. The 2019 Peace Garden follows a path of remembrance beside memorials for victims of both world wars. Two oaks planted in 1941 commemorate Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who wrote many songs in Bothfeld.
