St. Benno

St. Benno is a Roman Catholic church in Hanover’s Linden-Nord district, belonging to the St. Godehard parish. Christoph Hehl designed the church in a North German brick Gothic manner. Its neo-Gothic basilica presents a high portal gable, octagonal flank towers, buttresses, chapel extensions, and clerestory windows. The nave receives its light from clerestory windows. War damage destroyed the left aisle, while later restoration repaired the church and preserved its architectural form. The interior changed during the late twentieth century. A roof rider replaced the tower originally absent from the design. The church is dedicated to Saint Benno of Meissen. Its organ combines registers, manuals, a pedal, mechanical action, and a larch-wood case and facade. The parish history follows Linden’s change from a working-class area into a multicultural residential district. St. Benno was Linden’s second Catholic church. The church is recorded as wheelchair accessible to visitors.
