Künstlerhaus

Künstlerhaus in Hanover is a historic building on Sophienstraße, built between 1853 and 1856. Its rounded arches reflect the Rundbogenstil of the Hanover School of Architecture. Conrad Wilhelm Hase designed the structure, while Wilhelm Engelhard created its reliefs and figures.

The building opened in 1856 as a museum for art and science, supported by three Hanover associations and their collections. Sculptures of Dürer, Vischer, Leibniz and Humboldt mark the façade. After a larger museum opened beside Maschpark in 1902, the former museum became city property and a cultural venue.

Today, the Kunstverein Hannover, Literaturhaus Hannover, Kino im Künstlerhaus, Stiftung Niedersachsen and Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis work within its rooms. The shared courtyard with the Schauspielhaus hosts cultural and gastronomic events, particularly during summer. Above the main entrance, Stephan Huber’s chandelier Das Große Leuchten swings across Sophienstraße and illuminates evening events.
