Comeniusschule
Comeniusschule is a coeducational primary school in Hanover’s List district, housed in Paul Rowald’s historic building on Kollenrodtstraße. The school belongs to the Bonifatiusplatz school centre. Its plastered façade combines sandstone elements with Renaissance-Baroque decoration, a style considered modern when construction began around 1898. Johann Amos Comenius gives the school its namesake.
The building opened as a girls’ school in 1899, with classrooms alongside a drawing room, singing room, and shower bath. That shower bath was a novelty for its time. During the First World War and the Weimar Republic, limited space and reduced teaching days shaped daily school life. Air raids damaged the building during the Second World War, and evacuation interrupted the pupils’ schooling. After the war, the school reopened under the British Military Government.
By the late 1960s, the school had become coeducational, reflecting changing educational life in Hanover. A parent association supports projects within the school community. The façade’s sandstone details and the former shower bath preserve two contrasting glimpses of its educational history.
