Kellertheater Hamburg
Kellertheater Hamburg occupies a basement in Hamburg’s Brahms Kontor, where a compact stage welcomes audiences to amateur theatre. The hall seats roughly ninety to one hundred people, creating close contact between performers and spectators. More than a dozen directors shape a repertoire of around fifteen productions each year, with weekend performances at its centre. Workshops and training also give young people a route into acting.
The theatre began as the touring company Optimisten before finding a permanent home in the former DAG-Haus. Building renovations sent performances around Hamburg, often into churches, until the company returned to the Brahms Kontor. Its repertoire includes Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Der kleine Prinz, alongside productions such as Griselda Gambaro’s Ja sagen.... Christian Richard Bauer, Jytte-Merle Böhrnsen and Iris Mareike Steen have appeared on the stage, with Steen making her first performances there as a child. Fernando Arrabal’s Der Architekt und der Kaiser von Assyrien brought a North German amateur theatre competition victory, leaving a distinctive mark on the venue’s history.
