Hamburger Genossenschaftsmuseum

Hamburger Genossenschaftsmuseum stands in Hamburg’s Gewerkschaftshaus and presents 175 years of cooperative history. Since May 2014, its rooms have focused especially on consumer cooperatives and their place in everyday retail.

The central story follows Konsum-, Bau- und Sparverein „Produktion“, founded in Hamburg in 1899. The cooperative quickly became one of the world’s largest consumer cooperatives. Hamburg also hosted the Großeinkaufs-Gesellschaft Deutscher Consumvereine, which once owned more than 50 factories and shaped food wholesaling in Germany. Founded in 1904, the Zentralverband deutscher Konsumgenossenschaften has its headquarters in Hamburg and oversees 500 member cooperatives.

West German and DDR cooperatives appear through objects donated by former employees. An archive reaching back to 1855 preserves periodicals including the ZdK-Jahrbuch and Konsumgenossenschaftliche Rundschau. Photographs and films show consumer businesses, while cash registers trace changes in retail. Cooperative housing, funeral associations, people’s insurance and labour cooperatives broaden the view beyond food.
