Gedenkstätte Ernst Thälmann

Gedenkstätte Ernst Thälmann stands in Hamburg, occupying Ernst Thälmann’s former residence and commemorating a Communist Party leader. Ernst Thälmann lived here with his family before the Nazis arrested him in 1933.

Former comrades established the site in 1969, and a board of trustees continues to manage it privately. The square outside took the name Ernst Thälmann Platz in 1985. Its permanent exhibition examines the workers’ movement, resistance, Thälmann’s political leadership, his imprisonments, and his murder at Buchenwald in 1944. Documents and photographs connect his story with other communist resistance fighters persecuted and murdered by the Nazis.

Personal belongings add detail to the displays alongside the historical documents. You can examine the cases and signs independently, while staff also offer guided tours. Volunteers help maintain the site, which relies on donations for its upkeep.
