Domkirche Sankt Marien
Domkirche Sankt Marien stands in Hamburg’s Sankt Georg district as a Roman Catholic cathedral and metropolitan cathedral. Its brick façade follows Romanesque Revival forms, giving the building a strong architectural presence.
Arnold Güldenpfennig designed the cathedral between 1890 and 1893, making it Hamburg’s first new Catholic church since the Reformation. The double-tower front recalls Bremen Cathedral. Bishop Bernhard Höting requested this design while serving as Vicar Apostolic of the Nordic Missions in Germany. Construction paused during a cholera outbreak in summer 1892.
The cathedral was consecrated in 1893 and serves the Archdiocese of Hamburg, established in 1995. Wheelchair access makes the historic building easier to enter.
