Kapelle

Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle stands in Halbertshofen, a village in Bavaria’s Günzburg district, within the Kammeltal valley. Halbertshofen belongs to Neuburg an der Kammel and reaches back to the late fourteenth century.

Built in the fifteenth century, the chapel underwent major changes around 1620, including its interior decoration. Neorococo frescoes and decorative paintings fill the interior with ornate detail. At the chancel, a fresco shows Saint Helena raising the Cross, recalling her pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

An altar from around 1865 adds a neo-Romanesque element, with the style’s rounded arches and sturdy forms. That contrast brings together a fifteenth-century foundation, seventeenth-century renovation, and nineteenth-century altar.
