Nhà hát Lớn
Hanoi Opera House stands in central Hanoi, Vietnam, with neoclassical lines shaped by the Palais Garnier in Paris. Its smaller scale and locally suitable materials adapt that model to Hanoi. French colonial administration built the venue between 1901 and 1911, establishing a prominent architectural landmark.
During colonial rule, touring artists presented French and Italian repertoire there for mainly French audiences. After French departure, Vietnamese plays and musicals filled the building, while political events and street fighting marked its history. Western opera returned in 1960 through Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, organized under Vietnamese-Soviet cultural auspices.
Vietnam National Opera and Ballet presents Western classics, traditional Vietnamese dance, and modern Vietnamese productions there. Swan Lake appears alongside works by Vietnamese composers including Đỗ Nhuận, Lưu Hữu Phước, and Đặng Hữu Phúc. Performances also include works by Nguyễn Thiên Đạo, who studied with Messiaen in Paris.
