MiG-21bis
MiG-21bis stands in Hà Nội as a Soviet-designed supersonic fighter linked closely with Vietnam’s aviation history. Its single seat, single engine and triangular delta wings define the aircraft’s silhouette.
The Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau developed this fighter in the Soviet Union, and production continued from 1959 to 1985. More than 10,000 examples were built across factories in the USSR. High speed and rapid climbing came with limited range and manoeuvrability, while its simple construction supported easier maintenance. The aircraft served the Vietnam People’s Air Force during the Vietnam War and the years that followed. Squadrons 925 and 929 operated it among the last Vietnamese units before changing to aircraft such as the Su-27SK.
The display connects Hà Nội with a wider Cold War aviation story involving air forces around the world. Its delta wing remains the clearest detail to notice, expressing the design’s priority of speed and climb.
