Lucas-Cranach-Haus
Lucas-Cranach-Haus stands on the marketplace as a two-storey Baroque building with a mansard roof and arched portal. Its calm façade conceals a cellar where history meets nineteenth-century engineering. The stone entrance gives the house a distinctive presence among the surrounding marketplace buildings.
Barbara Brengbier, wife of Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, was born here. The property later passed through the family, linking the building to Cranach and Dasch heritage. A stone double crest above the portal combines the Cranach family’s winged serpent with the Dasch family’s pouch.
A major fire reshaped much of the structure, while older elements survived below ground. The vaulted cellar holds a pump station installed in 1895 for the city’s Wasserkunst. Its machinery carries water from the Thuringian Forest towards fountains and ornamental streams, leaving the house with one memorable detail beneath its Baroque façade.
