Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star

Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star stands in Gjirokastra as a history spot within the National Museum of Armaments. This two-seat jet trainer was built by American company Lockheed. Its design lengthened the Lockheed P-80 fuselage and added a second seat, extra instruments, and flight controls. Pilots used the aircraft to move from propeller planes into jets. This particular aircraft developed technical problems over the region, lost its course, and landed at Rinas Airport near Tirana. Albanian authorities kept the plane after returning its pilot to the United States. During Albania’s communist period, officials displayed the T-33 as a spy plane and linked it with Cold War tensions. The aircraft was moved to Gjirokastra and displayed within the castle museum. Outdoors, its exposed remains connect aviation technology with military history and the way Albania remembered perceived Western threats. The surrounding Gjirokastra Castle provides the setting for this exhibit. The T-33 also belongs to a wider story, because many countries used this reliable trainer for pilot transition and jet instruction.
