St. Nikolaus

St. Nikolaus stands in Oberkirch, a district of Füssen in Bavaria, with a single nave and flat wooden ceiling. Its five-sided choir rises beneath a cross-ribbed vault, while pointed-arch windows illuminate the interior. A low, square bell tower marks the choir’s northern corner, ending in an octagonal upper storey with an onion dome.

Built in late Gothic style during the first half of the fifteenth century, the building appears in a document from 1420. An early Baroque remodelling around 1617 added windows to the north side and reshaped the interior. Altars and a wooden pulpit followed during the 1660s, while the tower gained its upper structure in 1765. Fifteenth-century wall paintings survive especially around the choir, alongside seventeenth-century putti, consecration crosses, and gallery paintings.

The high altar bears the year 1655 and shows the Crucifixion, Saint Ulrich, Saint Wolfgang, and Saint Nicholas with three golden balls. The choir keystone repeats that emblem, set among painted vine motifs above the preserved historic furnishings.
