St. Josef
St. Josef is a chapel in Wies, within the Weißensee district of Füssen, Germany. The chapel honours Saint Joseph through its name and dedication.
It was created for farmers who lived far from Weißensee’s main church and needed a local place of prayer. The St. Mang Monastery established the chapel for Wies and nearby hamlets. Those hamlets include Oberdeusch, Unterdeusch, and Thal. A Romanesque altar anchors the chapel’s small interior. The building also carries a roof turret, and renovation covered its original painted wooden ceiling.
The bells hang in the roof turret. A votive plaque at the entrance remembers a fatal lightning strike during a storm. The votive plaque remains beside the chapel entrance. Local clergy later secured permission for weekday Masses inside St. Josef. The chapel stands as a protected historical monument in Füssen. Its Romanesque forms and memorial plaque connect architecture with the practical history of worship in Wies.
