Spitalkirche Heilig Geist
Spitalkirche Heilig Geist is a Roman Catholic church in Füssen, with a Rococo design shaped by hospital history. The present building followed a Gothic predecessor destroyed by fire.
Franz Karl Fischer designed the church after the monastery church in Dillingen, giving it a rectangular body and gabled roof. Its façade curves inward at the corners and rises towards a volute-shaped bell gable.
A large shell-shaped window sits above the entrance, while painted decoration draws attention across the exterior. Joseph Anton Walch created the façade painting and the interior frescoes.
The exterior presents the Holy Trinity, Bishop Joseph of Augsburg’s coat of arms, Saint Florian and Saint Christopher. Inside, a pendentive dome covers the rectangular chancel above a fresco of the Holy Spirit.
The nave ceiling shows the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the sacraments through painted scenes. Stucco-marble altars, wooden Stations of the Cross medallions and a guardian angel group complete the furnishings.
The high altar painting depicts Pentecost, while the side altars show Saints Catherine and Barbara, and Saint John Nepomuk. A small organ with wing doors stands on the gallery, linking the interior to Füssen’s musical history.
The church remains physically connected with the old hospital and the former city mill. This protected Bavarian monument brings together Rococo architecture, religious art and Füssen’s local history.
