Schneewittchen-Denkmal
In Frankfurt’s Innenstadt, the Schneewittchen-Denkmal stands in a secluded corner of the Taunusanlage, a city park. The wheelchair-accessible sculpture is made from Würzburger shell limestone. You see Snow White reclining on a sarcophagus, with the seven dwarfs gathered around her.
August Haag created the work in 1930, presenting the fairy-tale scene after Snow White’s stepmother has poisoned her. The dwarfs mourn beside her. The moment comes before a prince arrives to awaken her, holding the story at its most suspended point. Haag was born in Holzhausen, now Friedrichsdorf, and studied at the Frankfurt School of Applied Arts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin.
Other works by Haag stand at Frankfurt Main Cemetery and the Palmengarten. Here, pale stone and seven grieving figures hold the familiar story in a quiet park setting.
