Kirchner
Kirchner is an art spot in Frankfurt, Germany, linked to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Johanna Kirchner. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist artist from Aschaffenburg.
He spent much of his childhood in Frankfurt and co-founded the Brücke artists’ association in Dresden in 1905. His pictures show streets, bars and amusement halls.
French art influenced his work, and he joined the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne in 1912. Johanna Kirchner was born in Frankfurt in 1889.
She worked in the women’s movement and workers’ welfare, then resisted the Nazi regime underground and from France. She was executed in Berlin in 1944.
Frankfurt has awarded the Johanna Kirchner Medal since 1990 to people who fight oppression. The name connects Frankfurt’s artistic history with political resistance.
