Stadtpfarrkirche St. Nikolaus

Stadtpfarrkirche St. Nikolaus und St. Stephan rises above Eggenfelden’s rooftops in reddish-brown brick. Locals sometimes call it the Dom des Rottals. Citizens began this late Gothic church between 1410 and 1444, rather than a prince or bishop. The church is dedicated to Saints Nicholas and Stephen. Its five-aisled nave combines ribbed consoles, network vaults, and star vaults from the Gothic design. The interior returned largely to Gothic form during the nineteenth century. The neo-Gothic high altar dates from 1861, while late Gothic works remain throughout the church. Christ and the Twelve Apostles stands on the southern choir wall. The southern side altar presents the Coronation of Mary by the Trinity, shown as three persons, beside a women’s altar. A baptismal font from 1489 adds another historical detail. Klais built the current organ in Bonn in 1997, continuing a musical tradition whose earliest instrument dates around 1500. Its long reverberation suits romantic organ works especially well. The church provides wheelchair access for visitors.
