St. Peter
St. Peter stands on Kirchplatz in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk as a Catholic parish church in neo-Gothic style. Caspar Clemens Pickel designed the building, which was consecrated in 1898. Its eighty-metre north tower rises above two square entrance buildings and carries statues of Moses, David, John the Baptist, and Peter. The façade evokes a fortified city, with towers and buildings symbolising the heavenly city descending to earth.
Rapid population growth shaped the church’s history after farmland gave way to urban settlement during the nineteenth century. A temporary church rose within one hundred days in 1889, before the present building replaced it. The Second World War caused partial destruction, followed by reconstruction in phases from 1945 to 1981. A roof fire in 2007 led to further renewal, including windows by Jochem Poensgen, a new altar island, and modern lighting. Inside, an eighteen-metre-high nave opens into a bright three-aisled hall with artworks and a high altar beneath a canopy. Karl Göckel’s symphonic-French organ dates from 2001 and was restored after the fire.
