Matthäikirche
The Matthäikirche stands in Düsseldorf-Düsseltal as an Evangelical church with Bauhaus architecture and a bright, column-free interior. A semicircular apse closes the long rectangular hall.
Karl Wach and Heinrich Rosskotten designed the building, with contributions from Philipp Wilhelm Stang, between 1930 and 1931. Its steel skeleton made it Düsseldorf’s first church of this kind. Bomb damage led to restoration in 1953, while the original design remains visible especially on the southwest side.
Red brick fills the concrete-framed structure, while yellow sandstone finishes the portal, vestibule, and architectural details. Arno Breker’s sculpture of Matthew stands on the bell tower. Three organs support oratorios, cantatas, and organ concerts, including the large organ from 1955 and a chest organ from 2000. The foyer preserves a sombre memorial atmosphere.
