Annenkirche

Annenkirche in Dresden is a church whose Baroque form, tower, and side walls rise within the city. Johann George Schmidt designed the building opened in 1769, after the Seven Years’ War destroyed its predecessor.

The first church stood here from 1578, making it Dresden’s first church built after the Reformation. Early twentieth-century rebuilding preserved the tower and side walls while replacing much wood with steel and stucco. Historicism and Art Nouveau shape the interior, where modern fire protection influenced the materials and structure.

A modern altar painting unveiled in 2017 brings together a Tree of Life, a rainbow, and the risen Jesus. Marlene Dumas created it with Jan Andriesse and Bert Bogaard, while Ernst Paul’s relief shows Jesus with the Emmaus disciples. This pulpit altar offers a rare Lutheran feature in a city church, joining contemporary art with biblical imagery.
