St. Bonifatius
St. Bonifatius is a Roman Catholic church in Dortmund’s Innenstadt-Ost district, with a spacious, column-free hall, an apse, and a chapel. A large round arch connects the northern side room with the main space, while the altar anchors the austere interior.
Ludwig Becker designed the original church in Neo-Romanesque style between 1909 and 1910. World War Two left only the southeast tower and two western stair towers standing, so Emil Steffann created a new building in 1951 around those surviving elements. Hans Kaiser’s 1967 abstract red glazing depicts the Burning Bush.
Heinrich Gerhard Bücker’s monumental baptismal font dates from 1954 and uses a 125-kilogram bronze dove as a counterweight. When three hemp ropes lift the lid, the dove descends, creating the church’s most striking mechanical detail.
