Hansakontor
Hansakontor stands in the heart of Dortmund, where an office building meets the city’s post-war urban landscape. Its steel-concrete frame and shell limestone street façades show the architecture of the 1950s. A gently sloping hipped roof creates the appearance of a modern flat roof from the street.
Harpener Bergbau AG built the first phase for administration in 1950, followed soon after by a second phase. Ruhrkohle AG later used the building as its headquarters. Residential buildings had occupied the site until wartime destruction changed Dortmund’s plans for this part of the centre. The post-war construction supported efforts to simplify and extend the surrounding street system during the city’s reconstruction.
Guido Harbers designed the garden, which includes Wilhelm Wulff’s bronze sculpture Wettersteiger mit erhobener Grubenlampe. The sculpture arrived in 1958 and adds a mining reference to the landscaped setting. A later RAG office building appeared nearby in 1978, while the older structure remains a listed heritage site.
