Georgskirche
Georgskirche stands in Dortmund’s Aplerbeck district as a Protestant Romanesque cross basilica, built from local medieval tradition. Its distinctive form makes it the only Romanesque cross basilica in Dortmund, while its listed-monument status preserves a building from the city’s early history.
A church in Aplerbeck appears in records from 899, and archaeologists found earlier remains during restoration in 1963. The present structure likely rose between 1150 and 1160, became Lutheran in 1612, and later fell into ruin as industrial growth brought a larger church nearby. Lightning struck it in 1872, demolition plans followed in 1894, and the street became Ruinenstraße before restoration returned the building to its Romanesque appearance. In 1963, it became the main parish church again.
The surrounding history leaves one striking detail: the ruined church stood for decades beside a street whose name literally means “ruin street.”
