Friedensplatz

Friedensplatz in Dortmund is a central square beside Stadtgarten, surrounded by red-sandstone city buildings. The Dortmund City Hall faces the square beside the old Stadthaus and Dortmund Agency. A subway station carries the same name, placing this civic space within Dortmund’s administrative centre.

The site formerly carried the name Neuer Markt before becoming Friedensplatz. At its centre, Susanne Wehland’s Peace Column carries inscriptions in several languages about peace on Earth. A nearby ginkgo tree commemorates victims of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.

Political demonstrations and cultural events fill the open space, including the Micro!festival. Borussia Dortmund supporters also celebrate championship victories here. During football tournaments, large-screen broadcasts have drawn crowds to the square. In the 1970s, mayor Willi Reinke proposed reconstructing the old City Hall at the former Neuer Markt.
