Locomotiva 851.186
Locomotiva 851.186 stands in Como’s public gardens near the lake, preserved as a monument among grass and park vegetation. Its black paint and steam-era shape create a clear contrast with the surrounding greenery.
The 0-6-0T locomotive belongs to Italy’s 851 series, originally designed for railway lines across the central and southern Apennines. French engineering influenced its design, while six driving wheels gave it traction and manoeuvrability for later shunting work in stations and railway yards. The series often worked alongside the more numerous 835 locomotives before this example found a permanent place in Como.
A colourful play structure nearby lets children imagine themselves as train passengers. The over-century-old machine therefore shares the gardens with family life, while preserving a visible connection to Como’s railway and industrial history.
