Flora

Flora is a botanical garden in Cologne, where five and a half hectares hold roughly twelve thousand plant species from around the world. Its paths move through English landscape, Italian Renaissance, and French Baroque designs. Shaded arcades, waterfalls, ponds, springs, and a fountain bring water and shelter into the planting. Greenhouses lead towards alpine, iris, and lily gardens, each with a distinct botanical focus.

Peter Joseph Lenné designed Flora, which opened to the public in 1864 after railway construction displaced Cologne’s original cathedral garden. Wealthy citizens financed the new grounds through a joint-stock company, while Queen Augusta served as patron. Neglect after the Second World War gave way to rebuilding in the 1950s and later restoration under Eugen Moll. The historic glass palace reopened after renovation in 2014 and hosts weddings, galas, and conferences.

The camellia collection holds more than 500 plants representing 400 species, with some specimens over 100 years old. These camellias grow inside the subtropical greenhouse and outdoors, linking controlled warmth with Cologne’s changing seasons. Dank Augusta adds a café terrace, while mostly accessible paths connect the planting areas with the entrance.
