Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo

Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo stands on Piazza San Nicola in central Anacapri, on the island of Capri. Its eighteenth-century Baroque design rises around an octagonal plan, with curved lines, decorative stucco, light walls and a calm interior. The church is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and remains part of Anacapri’s religious and cultural life.

Leonardo Chiaiese, a Neapolitan ceramic craftsman, created the majolica floor that fills the entire interior. Hand-painted tiles form one continuous scene of Adam and Eve expelled from the Garden of Eden, with animals, trees and figures rendered in bright colours. A raised wooden walkway follows the walls, protecting the glazed surface while giving you a clear view of the composition.

Carved wood, gilded details and religious paintings surround the altar, but the floor holds the room’s attention. Each tile contributes to a single image, linking local devotion with Campania’s long ceramic tradition.
