مسجد سليمان باشا الخادم

Within Cairo’s Citadel, the Mosque of Suleiman Pasha al-Khadim stands compact beneath massive fortress walls. One pale-stone dome crowns a square prayer hall. Beside it, a pencil-shaped minaret draws a fine vertical line above the military setting.

Built in 1528, the mosque became the first Ottoman mosque in Egypt after Ottoman control began. It served the Janissary corps stationed at the Citadel. That central plan introduced clear Ottoman geometry where Cairo’s Mamluk mosques used layered ornament and carved stone. Marble mosaic panels along the base preserve a distinctly Cairene detail.

Inside, the rounded dome gathers footsteps and quiet voices into a single prayer space. Its balanced proportions favour calm over grandeur. Outside, the Citadel’s walls keep the building’s religious purpose close to its former military world. The slender minaret remains the clearest sign of Ottoman architectural arrival in Cairo.
