Szent István első vértanú-templom

Szent István első vértanú-templom stands among apartment buildings, with a calm Baroque façade and symmetrical bell towers. Statues of the Virgin Mary, Saint Monica and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino stand above the entrance.

Inside, Corinthian columns frame the sanctuary, while richly decorated side chapels reveal paintings, altars and sculpted figures. Their details combine Baroque forms with modern statues. The main altar, designed by János Henrik Jager, carries sculptures by Károly Bebo and a Saint Stephen painting by Lajos Márton. Saint Augustine has a side altar on the left.

On the right, the Consoling Virgin Mary altar adds another focal point beneath the church’s painted and sculpted decoration. An organ from the mid-nineteenth century stands below stained glass. Coloured light reaches the interior around a red marble altar that adds a modern layer. Commemorative plaques in the side chapels recall people buried beneath the church. Franciscan friars also shaped the complex through renovations, cloisters and coloured stained glass. Together, the façade, artworks and chapels connect intimate space with the scale of a major Baroque sanctuary.
