Magyar Állami Operaház stands in Hungary as a Neo-Renaissance opera house designed by Ybl Miklós.
Local Hungarian craftsmen built it with Hungarian materials. Marble columns, sweeping staircases, silk-lined walls, and golden details shape the entrance and interiors. The foyer contains intricate inlays and murals. Lotz Károly’s monumental ceiling fresco crowns the horseshoe-shaped auditorium with a celebration of music. An ornate bronze chandelier completes the hall. Each balcony carries distinct decorative details within the unified interior. The red and gold interior rewards close attention.
The auditorium is known for its exceptional acoustics and its rich red-and-gold decoration. The opera stage once welcomed the celebrated Enrico Caruso. Performances of opera and ballet, including works by Bartók and Kodály, connect the building with Hungarian musical culture. The venue remains home to the Hungarian National Ballet. Restoration refreshed the marble and modernised the stage while preserving historic details throughout the building. The building offers wheelchair accessibility to visitors.
