Waller Kirche

Waller Kirche is an evangelical parish church in Bremen’s Walle district, with a Renaissance tower and a rebuilt nave. Its Renaissance tower dates from 1658 and survived wartime destruction. The original church, known as Kerke Sunte Michalis tho Walle, was built during Bremen’s early Reformation period. The square tower base supports an octagonal shaft. It carries sandstone cornices and quoins, while the rebuilt nave retains the church’s original foundations. Julius Schulte-Frohlinde directed the postwar reconstruction of the nave. Inside, a flat wooden barrel vault spans the church, above an organ gallery on the west side. The organ follows seventeenth-century North German and Dutch models. Winold van der Putten built the instrument in 2002, giving the church a distinctive musical feature. The former cemetery now forms a green space. Gravestones preserve traces of the site’s earlier use, reaching back before 1646. The church is a protected cultural monument in Bremen. It remains part of the local community in Walle.
