Villa Steinbrügge
Villa Steinbrügge stands in Bremen’s Vegesack district as a two-storey, plastered classical villa with a hipped roof. Built around 1840 for merchant Georg Hinrich Steinbrügge, it presents a striking three-storey central risalit. A basement or raised lower floor supports the main structure, while later extensions added homes beside it and towards the Weser. Bremen has protected the villa as a monument since 1984.
A long greenhouse occupies the rear slope towards the Weser, where glass meets wrought iron in a quarter-circle profile. Built around the same time, this narrow structure became a protected monument in 2023. Its curved form reflects nineteenth-century greenhouse design, which spread from industrialising England to Germany through new iron construction methods. Together, the villa and greenhouse reveal how bourgeois residential culture developed in Vegesack.
