Villa Leupold

Villa Leupold stands in Bremen’s Horn-Lehe district as a two-storey villa built in 1872. Johann Georg Poppe shaped it in castle style with English Tudor elements.

Plastered walls and a hipped roof frame a three-storey corner turret and a rear staircase. Hermann Leupold, a linen merchant and consul for the Kingdom of Saxony, commissioned the residence. Its three-axis portico carries Corinthian columns beneath the inscription “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” A stone family crest fills the centre of the cornice, while six sculptures around the building also have monument protection.

The property changed hands over the years, including residences by the Heydenreich and Martens families. Menke Park extends beside the grounds across three hectares, separated from them by a fence. Offices, practices and a club now occupy the building, which Bremen protects as a listed monument. A particularly memorable view combines the turret, the Corinthian portico and the words carved above its entrance.
