Schloss Schönebeck
Schloss Schönebeck is a water castle in Bremen-Vegesack, set in the Schönebeck district beside the Schönebecker Aue. North German half-timbering shapes the building, while the stream flows onward towards the Weser.
Junker Franz Wilken von Schönebeck probably built the castle during the seventeenth century, though its beginnings remain uncertain. Bremen acquired the estate in 1952 after several changes of ownership. Restoration turned the building into the Heimatmuseum Schloss Schönebeck, dedicated to Vegesack’s history and maritime heritage. Exhibits cover sailing ships, steamships, herring luggers, whaling, and the early development of sea rescue. Collections from the former Witteburg stoneware factory stand alongside accounts of explorer Gerhard Rohlfs, who was born in Vegesack.
A protected historic monument, the castle includes its grounds, an administrator’s house, a park, and gardens. Concerts and civil weddings take place in a room with a maritime design.
