Martinikirche

Martinikirche stands in Bremen’s old town near the Weser, where its late-Gothic brick walls shape the riverside cityscape. Pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttresses give the Protestant church its distinctive architectural form.

Founded in 1229, the church ranks among Bremen’s oldest. Severe damage in 1944 interrupted its long history, but reconstruction restored the building after the Second World War. Monument protection has safeguarded its fabric since 1973.

The church brings together medieval origins, brick Gothic design and twentieth-century rebuilding in one place. Its position near the Weser adds a clear Bremen detail to the view.
