Landherrnamt
Landherrnamt stands in Bremen’s Schnoor district as a Neo-Romanesque building designed by Alexander Schröder. Completed in 1856, its sandstone facade gives the compact historic quarter a distinct architectural landmark.
The building first housed the office of the Landherrn, who administered the State of Bremen from 1850. Police, administrative services and dike authorities later occupied its 1,000 square metres, before postwar use brought a welfare centre and Bremen’s Dike Authority. The Catholic Church took over in 1964, creating a nunnery and later accommodating St. Johannis School classes.
Repairs in 2011 improved conditions for schoolchildren and restored the 150-year-old facade. Removing the former pink finish revealed the sandstone’s natural colour.
