Ehemaliges Krematorium

Ehemaliges Krematorium stands within Riensberger Friedhof in Bremen-Schwachhausen, surrounded by lawns, flower beds, oak groves and linden avenues. A large lake lies at the cemetery’s heart.

Heinrich Wilhelm Behrens designed the single-storey building for the Verein für Feuerbestattung between 1903 and 1906. Four fluted Ionic columns support its classical portico. Above the central hall, a copper-covered dome combines with Jugendstil details inside. The building became Northern Germany’s first crematorium.

An extension followed in 1927, while outdated technology ended crematorium operations by 1988. Since 2002, the interior has served as a columbarium with glass and sandstone grave plates. Personal authorisation limits access to the urn room. Riensberger Friedhof also contains artistically significant graves, mausoleums and crypts, including memorials made from alabaster and marble.
