Alte Apotheke
Alte Apotheke stands in Bremen’s Burglesum district, in the Lesum area, as a classicist architectural landmark. Carl Penz combined his residence and pharmacy there.
Completed in 1845, the building has one plastered storey, a gabled roof, and forms associated with late Classicism. Only the southeastern glazed veranda remains from that original arrangement.
In 1976, Bremen artist Heinz Lilienthal added thick glass mosaics, while glass, wood, ceiling paintings, and wallpaper shaped the interior. The pharmacy moved to a nearby building in 1979.
After years of vacancy, renovation between 1992 and 1993 converted the building into a surgical practice. The practice later moved to the Lesum Health Center.
Bremen placed the Alte Apotheke under monument protection in 1982, preserving its documented architectural and historical character. The building survived the demolition proposals in Burglesum.
Its recorded uses connect a former domestic pharmacy with a later surgical practice and personnel-service office. Its architecture remains tied to Bremen’s Lesum area.
