Blautopf

Blautopf is a spring in Blaubeuren that forms the source of the river Blau and defines this natural setting. Its vivid blue water comes from limestone particles and light scattering. Water reaches the spring through the karst limestone of the Swabian Jura, shaped by underground passages and erosion. A steep funnel gives the pool its depth. The pool also opens into Blauhöhle, an underwater cave system containing passages, chambers, and a long cave river. Cave exploration demands specialist training and diving equipment. Local legends surround the water, including Schöne Lau, a mermaid whose story remains part of Blautopf’s local culture. A stone sculpture of Schöne Lau stands beside the water.
