Monument a Francesc Macià
Monument a Francesc Macià stands at the southern end of Barcelona’s Plaça de Catalunya, beside La Diosa and near the Canaletas fountain. Josep Maria Subirachs completed the sculpture in 1991, placing it among works by Josep Clarà, Pablo Gargallo and Frederic Marès.
A travertine base uses staggered blocks to evoke Catalonia’s history, while an inverted concrete staircase points towards its unfinished future. The first three steps represent Francesc Macià’s three years as president of the Generalitat, from 1931 to 1933. Graffiti-style inscriptions record names, dates and places, and an iron Catalan coat of arms appears on the back. In front, a separate monolith carries a bronze bust based on Josep Clarà’s 1932 portrait, creating a realistic contrast with the surrounding abstract forms.
Macià was a Catalan politician and military figure who proclaimed the Catalan Republic on 14 April 1931. The monument’s most striking detail remains the incomplete staircase, whose unfinished steps turn political history into a visible work still moving forward.
