Maternitat
Maternitat is a Barcelona public sculpture by Vicenç Navarro i Romero, created in 1928 from Montjuïc stone. Its subject is motherhood, shown through a mother and child.
A young mother holds her child in a protective embrace, giving the two figures a calm, classical presence. The figures reflect the classical ideals of Noucentisme in Catalonia.
Navarro i Romero’s design belongs to a period when public art expressed ideas about family, education, and social values. Montjuïc stone connects the sculpture with Barcelona’s built landscape.
Its official commission linked the work to the artistic programme surrounding the International Exhibition of 1929. The mother’s pose communicates protection, family love, and serenity.
